Sometimes, whether because of a difficult week, an upsetting conversation or just a general, existential feeling of sadness and ‘flatness’, we need to narrow down what we are focusing on and giving our time to, just temporarily.
This is where going back to the basics and keeping it simple really helps. It’s a cleansing experience, a necessary and often reassuring one.
Today, focus on the everyday tasks or habits, in your work day or whilst at home, and try to carry them out with consciousness.
Whether you are rinsing out a mug, filing papers or drinking a cup of tea, be aware of what you are doing with your hands. The order of things. The physical sensations.
For those few minutes, make that task your only focus–as important as bathing a newborn baby or handling a delicate and rare ornament.
If the word reverence doesn’t put you off, try it. Treat your object or experience with reverence, as though you are a child, experiencing it for the first time.
These little rituals can be wonderful anchors for presence and give you an easy way in to those regular moments of stillness and awareness that are vital even in the busiest of days.
Have a peaceful and productive Monday, whatever it is you’re up to! And do let me know how you get on. I’d love to hear from you.
